Arraymusic opens its exciting 2007/08 season with a concert celebrating the work of James Tenney. Tenney, who died in August, 2006, was a pioneer in contemporary

music for most of his adult life. While a professor at York University, James Tenney composed several works for the Arraymusic Ensemble, and was a mentor to several members of Array's organization, both past and present. While we are deeply saddened by the passing of our friend and we understand the world of composition has lost a true visionary, we are extremely honoured to have the opportunity to celebrate the late composer's life’s work this season.

Friday, November 23, 2007, The Arraymusic Ensemble performs Spectrum 1, commissioned by Arraymusic in 1991 and composed for the Arraymusic Ensemble. Array's Artistic Director and clarinetist Bob Stevenson performs Monody, an early work for solo clarinet. Bob presented the Canadian premiere of this piece in the early '80s under the composer's supervision and has since played it many times with the composer in attendance. Array concludes the concert with Bridge, an extraordinary composition for two pianos, eight hands.

In Bridge, the two instruments are tuned to a just intonation set, producing a twenty-two pitch octave. When Jim composed this groundbreaking work in 1984, the composer sought to again return to the issue of harmony. In his original notes, he says:

“In our (20th) century, rhythm, timbre, texture, form and even the aesthetic premises and social functions of music have all been reexamined and elaborated to an extent without precedent in any earlier period of Western (or perhaps any other) music. What has not changed since that watershed year of 1910 - at least in any progressive-evolutionary sense - is harmony, and it seems time now to confront this issue again, since it hardly can be ignored indefinitely. It is far too basic, even primitive, an  aspect of auditory perception ever to be suspended entirely.”

Do not miss this rare opportunity to hear a truly great work of the 20th century - a composition that changes your perception of music itself - and to share in a commemorative concert event that celebrates one of our greatest composers.
