GRÜNEN (http://www.achimkaufmann.com/gruenen.html)
Germany trio of Achim Kaufmann (piano), Robert Landfermann (bass), and Christian Lillinger (drums) make the classic jazz piano trio fresh again. With 2 releases on Clean Feed, the trio mixes loose structures and improvised passages diving into rhythmic territory. Lillinger and Kaufmann bounce off each other in a disjointed swing held together by bassist Landfermann. Quieter passages see bass creaks converse with down trodden piano notes. Deliberate clattering reveals a heaviness to the group's sound that is almost always held back in lieu of bouyant grooves or carefully meandering free form dialogue. These rising stars of the German avant jazz & improv scene are a rare appearance on Canadian soil, don't miss it!

THE CLUTTERTONES (https://healingpowertoronto.bandcamp.com/album/cluttertones-ordinary-joy)
Bassist Rob Clutton's experimental ensemble sits somewhere between avant jazz, contemporary composition, and the outsider songwriter. Born out of Toronto's Rat Drifting scene/label, his band includes such avant luminaries as Lina Allemano (trumpet), Ryan Driver (analog synth, piano, voice), and Tim Posgate (guitar). Sounding like a mix between radio tuning and some lost alien communication, The Cluttertones elicit real emotion, while also diving deep into the sonic unknown. Medatative passages ground the band with Allemano's airy trumpet notes gently guiding these exercises in sparsity. Other moods see Clutton's minimalist mandering in the forefront with blues influenced guitar anti-licks climbing out of the shadows. Cultivating an atmosphere too tense to full give way to new ages sensibilities Clutton careful manicures what appears to be a rag tag group of intent listeners. Yet another one of Toronto greatest kept secrets.
