At the suggestion of composer and former Array Artistic Director Linda Catlin Smith, Arraymusic created its first Young Composers’ Workshop and Concert (YCW) in 1987. Today, Array's workshop still provides Canada’s Artistic Directors of new music with a major scouting ground to discover the best up-and-coming compositional talent.

Led by a Professional Composer/Workshop Leader, Array's Artistic Director and Array's Ensemble members, each season Arraymusic puts out a call for scores to be submitted (international composers are welcome to submit) and selects (by a professional jury) at least 4 emerging composers to participate. These four are given the rare opportunity to gain professional training and performances by members of The Array Ensemble.

Participants work directly with Arraymusic’s Artistic Director and a Workshop Leader to compose a new work over the course of a month, which is then performed in concert.

PLEASE POST Young Composers' Workshop

Arraymusic is accepting submissions for its 2016|17 YOUNG COMPOSERS' WORKSHOP. Now in its 31st year, Array's workshop is designed to benefit composers who have completed their basic studies in composition. There is no age restriction.

This year, the Young Composers' Workshop is dedicated to the creation of 4 new works -- instrumentation TBA.

The Young Composers’ Workshop jury selects four (4) participants to each create a work for a prescribed instrumentation. Over a four week period in the month of May, each composer is given one session per week to work directly with the musicians, conductor and mentor. Composers are encouraged to attend each other’s sessions to derive as much benefit as possible.

The completed pieces of music, or works-in-progress, will be performed in a public concert at The Array Space in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, on Saturday, May 27th, 2017 at 3pm.

Participants must be willing to be in Toronto during their workshop sessions and to pay for their own travel and accommodation. There is no application form. Interested composers should apply by submitting through email or by post:

1. A curriculum vitae

2.Two scores if applicable (paper or PDF) of previous works. Or, in the case of programmed or non-notated works, explanations of the process(es) used in the creation of the accompanying recordings (see #3)

3. Two recordings on CD, USB Key, as a download or through our online submission form OR a url (Soundcloud, ftp, dropbox, Hightail) to demonstrate the applicant’s ability to compose for chamber ensemble.
